North American Energy Partners Celebrates Milestones at CNRL's Horizon Mine

ACHESON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Apr. 13, 2006) - Celebrations took place earlier this week at Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.'s (CNRL's) Horizon Mine as North American Energy Partners Inc. (NAEP) commemorated the startup of a new Hitachi EX8000 mining shovel and the opening of the on-site maintenance facility.

The EX8000 is Hitachi's largest mining shovel with a bucket capacity of 40 cubic meters. The new mining shovel was commissioned on April 2nd and went into full production on April 6th. It is the first of two to be owned and operated by NAEP at the Horizon Mine. NAEP has been anticipating the arrival of the EX8000 since overburden removal work began at Horizon last year. The acquisition of this new mining shovel will keep NAEP on the leading edge of mining technology and improve overall efficiency.

NAEP's on-site maintenance facility, which has been under construction since the overburden removal project commenced, has been completed on schedule and on budget. This shop has truck maintenance bays, a welding bay and a wash bay. The facility is essential in ensuring that NAEP's equipment fleet continues to operate at peak performance levels throughout the duration of the overburden removal project.

"We have a ten year contract with CNRL to move an annual average of over 40 million cubic meters of overburden at the Horizon Mine," stated William Koehn, Vice President, Operations and Chief Operating Officer. "To do this you require excellence when it comes to people, equipment and infrastructure. The completion of the shop facility and the commissioning of the EX8000 coupled with our quality people gives us all the key requirements to get the job done."

For over 50 years NAEP has been one of the largest providers of mining, site preparation, piling and pipeline installation services in western Canada. NAEP provides services primarily to major oil, natural gas, petrochemical and other natural resource companies within western Canada and maintains one of the largest independently owned equipment fleets in the region.
