North Bay CAs Prepared 88 Free Tax Returns

Chartered Accountants have helped low-income earners in their communities since 1969

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 18, 2013) - For the 45th year in a row, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario organized its annual Free CA Tax Clinics, which were offered at various times and locations across the province. During tax season, Chartered Accountants (CAs) stepped up for the needy in their community by preparing 88 tax returns at two North Bay clinics for people in low-income brackets. Across Ontario, CA preparers did a record 13,936 tax returns.

Designed to serve low-income people who need help preparing tax returns, the Free CA Tax Clinics help people receive much-needed tax credits and refunds. Since the program was initiated, thousands of Ontarians have benefited from the tax-time help of the CAs.

Today, the program is an ongoing partnership between over 200 community service groups that host the clinics and close to 1,800 volunteer Chartered Accountants and their associates who complete the returns free of charge. The program runs between mid-February and the end of March. The Free CA Tax Clinics are open to those with total annual household incomes less than $30,000 with dependents and less than $20,000 with no dependents. The next clinics run during tax season in 2014.

"The Free CA Tax Clinics have grown significantly over the years: from the pilot in 1969 with just 500 clients to this year's over 13,900 returns and 1,750 volunteers. We will continue to grow the program and assist more low-income individuals in our communities prepare their tax returns," said Samantha Yu, CA, Associate Director and Practice Advisor, Member Services at the Institute. "Volunteering at the Free CA Tax Clinics is a rewarding experience for our members.
