NORTH BAY RESIDENT RECEIVES ARTHRITIS VOLUNTEER AWARD

The Grey Power Insurance Arthritis Volunteer Of The Year Award will be presented to Heather Hanna on Friday, March 4, 2005 at The Arthritis Society's More than just Desserts gala event in Sudbury, ON. Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 4, 2005) - The Grey Power Insurance Arthritis Volunteer Of The Year Award will be presented to Heather Hanna on Friday, March 4, 2005 at The Arthritis Society's More than just Desserts gala event in Sudbury, ON. The award is presented annually to a volunteer who has shown extraordinary leadership qualities in managing an Arthritis Society activity or program and who has a positive influence on others locally, regionally or provincially.

Hanna has been an active member of The Arthritis Society for over 7 years and has taught hundreds of people in her community how to manage their disease. When diagnosed with four different types of arthritis, one of Hanna's first actions was to take The Arthritis Society's Arthritis Self-Management Program (ASMP). ASMP taught Hanna how to cope with her disease on a daily basis and gave her the tools she needed to get her life back under control.

ASMP is a health promotion program designed to help people with arthritis better understand arthritis, learn ways to cope with chronic pain and take more of an active role in managing their arthritis. ASMP participants have a chance to learn new information and skills, discuss new ideas and share experiences with peers. This program is available in several communities throughout the province.

Hanna is the past president of her local Bluebird Club and helps people living with arthritis learn to cope as an ASMP leader. "Being involved is my way of giving back to The Society for all it has given me," said Hanna.

Hanna will be presented with a beautiful etched glass plaque at the More than just Desserts fundraising event. In addition, Hanna's name is added to similar awards stationed at the head office of Grey Power Insurance and the national/provincial head office of The Arthritis Society.

Hosted by the Radisson Hotel in Sudbury, the More than just Desserts gala features dessert tasting and judging, hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer tasting, silent auction, live auction, door prizes, raffle and live jazz trio. The event begins at 7 p.m.

The award, sponsored by Grey Power Insurance, is the most prestigious annual award given to an arthritis volunteer by The Arthritis Society in Ontario.
