Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 17, 2006) - Jan Heinonen of North Bay has received the 2006 Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario President's Award.

The award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to ETFO during the past year. Heinonen received the award from ETFO President Emily Noble at the federation's annual meeting Wednesday.

Heinonen is the president of the Near North Occasional Teacher Local whose 290 members staged a three-week work stoppage this spring in support of their demands for fair pay for substitute (or occasional) teachers.

In presenting the award Noble described Heinonen as a focused and strong- minded leader who was determined to achieve a fair wage settlement for her members during the contract negotiations. "She has worked tenaciously, quietly and tirelessly serving and assisting members," Noble said. "She is very much a team player who always talks about the team and others."

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 70,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada.

The ETFO annual meeting ends today.
