North Shore-LIJ, Maimonides Announce Strategic Partnership

BROOKLYN, NY--(Marketwired - August 19, 2015) - The North Shore-LIJ Health System and Maimonides Medical Center today announced they have entered into a strategic partnership that will help Maimonides build on its success in meeting the current and future health needs of Brooklyn. These discussions have been ongoing since they were first announced in February of this year.

North Shore-LIJ and Maimonides have decided to pursue a full integration in a phased approach that will begin immediately with a comprehensive strategic partnership, with both institutions maintaining their independence and separate governance structures. Maimonides will continue to operate as a full-service, tertiary and teaching hospital and be a critical component of a growing network of services that the North Shore-LIJ Health System and Maimonides will establish in Brooklyn.

The strategic partnership will be composed of joint ventures and other activities that will strengthen Maimonides and expand its leadership role in the region. North Shore-LIJ will work with Maimonides in enlarging its ambulatory network of clinical services to position the hospital for continued success as lead entity of one of the state's three largest Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) programs.

In addition, North Shore-LIJ will provide Maimonides with capital resources and access to its extensive shared services infrastructure and expertise, enabling the hospital management to make needed investments while continuing to improve operating efficiencies.

"Pam Brier has built an organization focused on excellence with an unwavering commitment to meeting the health care needs of the communities served by the hospital," said Michael Dowling, North Shore-LIJ's President and CEO. "Maimonides is now a key strategic partner with North Shore-LIJ as our health system seeks to expand its presence in Brooklyn. We look forward to combining our complementary strengths as we work with the Maimonides Board and management team to identify other opportunities to meet the critical health needs of the borough's 2.6 million residents."

Maimonides President and CEO, Pamela Brier, who recently announced she will retire at the beginning of 2016 after two decades of leadership at Maimonides, said, "North Shore-LIJ will be a great partner for Maimonides. We share a common vision about the need to find innovative approaches for managing care and keeping people healthy. And we have common values about putting patients first and supporting the doctors and other staff who care for them. This partnership with North Shore will -- simply put -- make an enormous difference in our ability to take better care of people who live in Brooklyn."

"We are confident that this partnership will quickly provide value to both organizations, and also benefit the many diverse communities of Brooklyn that rely on Maimonides for their health care needs," said Kenneth Gibbs, the current Board Chair and Ms. Brier's successor as President and CEO of Maimonides. "We look forward to working closely with North Shore-LIJ's talented leadership as Maimonides continues to provide the excellent clinical outcomes that have placed our services in the top tier nationally. Everyone is a winner today."
