North York Women's Shelter Celebrates 25 years of Hope, Help and Healing

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 4, 2009) - North York Women's Shelter ("NYWS") is excited to celebrate 25 years of hope, help and healing at the annual Mother's Day Hope Gala on May 7, 2009, at the Estates of Sunnybrook. Funds raised at the Gala will give the women and their children the support they need to heal from the trauma experienced through violence and abuse.

NYWS has been offering shelter, safety and support to over 10,000 survivors of violence for 25 years. With 23 women in Ontario being killed by their partners or ex partners in 2008, the need for this service has increased more than ever. Funds raised at the Gala will give the women and their children the support they need to heal from the trauma experienced through violence and abuse.

"I found this shelter during a time of despair and realized they had a lot to offer women in trouble. The shelter had a lot of support to offer me through counseling at women's group, and assistance with finding housing. NYWS is a place of love, care and positivity. I regained my strength and self esteem here. I also feel that my time here has enabled me to contribute back to my community. I am blessed to have been here and privileged to share my experience." P.J.C a former resident of NYWS.

In order to fulfill their mandate, NYWS requires resources and support. The Hope Gala will help raised funds to support the efforts of NYWS in providing excellent programs and services to women and children who are survivors of violence. This year's Gala goal is to raise $30,000 for the shelter. This Mother's Day, please join us in celebrating mothers everywhere by helping give so many women and their children a second chance.
