PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - Jun 15, 2011) - NorthEast Treatment Centers' innovative programs have earned it an international reputation as a leader of the Recovery Movement. Closer to home, NET has won two "Making a Difference Awards," conferred by the Philadelphia Mayor's Drug and Alcohol Executive Commission.
NET's Consumer Council (http://www.net-centers.org/ourrecoverymodel) and John T. Carroll, Director of NET Steps, (http://netsteps.org) were honored for their work as local leaders who have made significant contributions by being positive role models and voices of recovery.
Carroll received the award given to "an individual who is making a difference as a program director." In 2003, along with his wife, Annette, he founded NET Steps, a Medication Assisted Recovery program that provides methadone maintenance and ambulatory detoxification. In 2004, in partnership with the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Prison System, NET Steps began providing methadone maintenance services for incarcerated persons.
"Our model is based not only on stabilizing the brain chemistry but also on the idea of spiritual health and getting one's life back in balance," Carroll said. "We have a dynamic and innovative counseling model and very high sobriety levels and compliance rates."
NET's Consumer Council received a special award "for innovation and transformation." The Council, composed of representatives from each of NET's 40-plus treatment groups, was established in August 2006 to give persons in recovery a voice in their own treatment and in the direction of the agency.
"One of main goals of the program is to help people become independent and self-reliant," said Joseph Schultz, Division Director of NET's PA Adult Behavioral Health Services. "The Consumer Council demonstrates the trust NET has in the people who come here for treatment. We want to empower our clients to make decisions and to have opportunities to learn by doing."
The Council organizes consumer participation in city projects, such as the weekly Frankford Community Clean-Up, and establishes collaborative partnerships with community organizations.
"These awards are a fine summation of the dynamic nature of NET's commitment to the Recovery Oriented System of Care," said Terence McSherry, NET President and CEO. "NET has been able to create this kind of culture in its treatment programs throughout the organization."
