Northern Star Mining Corp.: Update on Project

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - March 22, 2005) - Northern
Star Mining Corp. (TSX VENTURE:NSM) (the "Company") is pleased to
announce that development of its wholly owned Midway gold project,
located 16 km west of the city of Val d'Or, Quebec and 1 km south of the
Trans-Canada highway continues on schedule.

The head frame has been delivered to the site of shaft no. 1 on the
Midway project (shaft no. 1 is 3,000 feet deep). The top of the shaft
collar has been inspected, and the head frame foundation work has been
completed.

Presently, the company is surveying final emplacement of the hoist
foundation and hoist compressor building and has begun engineering of
the hoist installation.

Erection of the head frame should be completed by mid-April, followed by
dewatering installation and start up at shaft no. 1.

Along with the above, surface exploration drilling (58 holes have been
completed and released to date) will recommence in mid-April and will
target new mineralized zones and infill drilling on known gold
mineralization.

The company, in December of 2004, entered into a purchase agreement with
Louvicourt Mines for the acquisition of head frame, hoist and associated
mining equipment which had been previously used at their no. 2 shaft.

The general equipment list consists of:

1. 35 meter steel head frame with two 10 foot diameter sheave wheels and
skips.

2. Nordberg 10 foot double drum hoist with 1,250 HP electric motor,
generator, electric system, hardware, drums, main and auxiliary MG-set,
etc.

3. 2 XVHE, Ingresoll Rand compressors (2,800 and 3,000 cfm)

4. 5,000 KVA transformer (4160V/2400u) and 5KV breaker.

5. 2,500 HP synchronous motor.

6. Miscellaneous hardware and spare sets.

The above head frame and hoist combination has a rated depth capacity to
approximately 5,000 feet.

The above equipment is presently available immediately, and the head
frame has been transported to our shaft no. 1.

The above is part of the Company's engineering studies and work towards
dewatering of Northern Star's shaft no. 1 and exploration of the Midway
- Malartic Goldfields project from underground. The Company has
completed initial site clearing work and has reopened and secured the
shaft opening. The Company has also engaged Stavibell Inc., a mining
engineering consulting firm to help design and install the head frame
foundation.

The decision to begin underground exploration was taken in light of the
significant and persistent results obtained since the start up of the
present drill campaign.

Gold assays are consistent to date over all 58 holes, with the amount of
gold observed directly proportional to the pyrite percentage in the
drill holes assayed to date; continuing to prove an excellent tool in
the exploration of the Midway Project.

Gold mineralization on the project is primarily hosted in roughly ovoid
shaped gabbroic and mafic lenses within ultramafic rocks of the Cadillac
Break. Gold mineralization occurs within the gabbro bodies and presents
the appearance of discrete, elongated lenses. The gabbro and mafic
bodies appear stacked en echelon at depth, and along strike and plunge.
Gold values are consistent and are associated with pyrite content. Other
mineralization encountered consists of chalcopyrite, galena,
arsenopyrite and rare visible gold.

Lower grade mineralization is present in porphyry intrusives, which may
be controlling structures of the gold mineralization. It appears that
all the mineralization is associated with the introduction of nearby
porphyry intrusives. Furthermore, the Company has also identified the
presence of a previously unknown porphyry intrusive on the project. This
new porphyry and surrounding area will be targeted in future drilling.

New gold zone brings total known gold zones to ten

To date, drilling in the present program, which began in late 2003, has
resulted in the discovery of new gold mineralized zones that, with the
four previously known zones, bring the total known individual gold zones
at the project to at least ten. The different gold zones remain
generally open along strike and at depth. For example, the Upper Halet
zone has been traced along strike for at least 700 feet and remains open
at both ends.

With the recent acquisition of the neighboring Malartic Goldfields
project from Barrick Gold Corp., the Company's Midway - Malartic
Goldfields project hosts all of the past producing Malartic Goldfields
mine, which produced over 2,000,000 ounces of gold to a depth of 2,700
feet.

During the history of mining, production came from approximately 23
gabbroic and mafic lenses similar in nature and character to those
encountered during the present drilling.

The present drilling has been concentrated on a small portion of the
Midway - Malartic Goldfields project located between the two production
shafts of the Malartic Goldfields nine complex, on an area that was
previously occupied by the mining town of Halet, Quebec.

The Midway - Malartic Goldfields consists of 53 contiguous claims
comprising some 1,200 hectares.

In addition, the Malartic Goldfields portion of the project (purchase
agreement with Barrick Gold, previously announced on November 17, 2004)
consists of two mining concessions comprising 140 hectares and two
surface leases comprising 55 hectares. Two 2,700 foot deep shafts are
located on the Midway - Malartic Goldfields project (a five compartment
shaft #2, and a three compartment shaft #1), with shaft #1 presently
undergoing engineering work for dewatering and installation.

The project straddles the prolific Cadillac Break, associated with the
majority of the gold deposits of the Malartic - Cadillac Mining camp of
the Abitibi gold belt.

Present drilling has revealed gold zones open at depth with the results
e.g. hole NSM 04-50 demonstrating mineralization continuity below a
depth of 1,600 feet.

Historic drilling below the lowest level of mining by Malartic
Goldfields clearly shows that gold mineralization continues at depth and
is open. Furthermore, the portion of the property to the south and east
of shaft #1 remains largely unexplored. This area, on the Cadillac
Break, contains similar geology to the area presently being drilled.
