Notice on Application by Bruce Power for a Licence to Transport Steam Generators

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 18, 2010) - A public hearing took place on September 28-29, 2010 on the application by Bruce Power Inc. for a transport licence for the shipment of 16 steam generators by ship through the Great Lakes and St.Lawrence Seaway to Sweden. Further to this hearing, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) determined that it required additional analysis from Commission staff in specific areas and that it would allow additional time for supplementary written submissions from hearing participants.

In this regard, the Commission received today a supplementary written submission from Commission staff that provides, in addition to other information, additional analysis in the following three requested specific areas: (1) the environmental impact assessment conducted pursuant to the Nuclear Safety and Control Act; (2) the emergency plan, including accident scenarios; and (3) the International Atomic Energy Agency Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material and the amount of radioactivity allowed in shipments.

The Commission has instructed the Secretary to send this notice, together with the supplementary submission from Commission staff referred to above, to all 79 hearing participants, and to provide them a further 30-day period to file supplementary written submissions regarding this matter. Upon receipt of the additional submissions, the Commission will continue its deliberations and confer with regards to the information on the record and then determine if further information is needed or if the Commission is ready to proceed with a decision regarding Bruce Power's application.

November 22, 2010 is the deadline to submit a supplementary written submission. Submissions shall be filed with the Secretariat at the address below. Once filed, the submissions will be publicly available upon request to the Secretariat.
