Nouveau Monde Mining Enterprises Inc.: First Exploratory Metallurgical Results from the Matawinie Graphite Property

GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Nov. 6, 2013) - Nouveau Monde Mining Enterprises Inc. ("Nouveau Monde") (TSX VENTURE:NOU) is pleased to announce the first scoping level metallurgical results made on its Matawinie graphite property. One sample of 10kg collected alongside channel sample TN-TR01 on the Ti-NOU showing was submitted on September 30th to SGS in Lakefield, Ontario, with the goal of generating a first graphite concentrate. The objective of this study was to assess the metallurgical response of Matawinie graphite ore to a typical crushing, grinding and flotation process employed in the industry as well as to characterize the concentrate in regards to carbon grade and recovery as well as graphite flake size distribution. No thermal or chemical purification was carried out on the flotation concentrate.

RESULTS

The measured carbon head grade for the sample was 18.2% Ct. The scoping level flotation test upgraded this material to 82.4% Ct at a mass recovery into the concentrate of 21.2%. A size fraction analysis of the flotation concentrate revealed that 38.4% of the final concentrate was composed of large flake graphite (greater than 80 mesh), at an average carbon grade of 95.8% Ct. Almost half, or 17.9%, of the large flakes reported to the Jumbo flake category of greater than 48 mesh at an average grade of 96.2% C(t). The table below summarizes the flake size distribution and the carbon grade of the greater than 100 mesh size fraction containing 44.9% of the mass at an average grade of 95.9% Ct

Flake size concentrate % of Weight % C(t)
+32 mesh 2,4% 97,0%
+48 mesh 15,5% 96,1%
+65 mesh 13,8% 95,4%
+80 mesh 6,7% 95,7%
+100 mesh 6,5% 96,2%
Total of 44.9% Average of 95.9%

These very encouraging results were obtained in a single flotation test using typical flotation conditions for a first scoping level test. Further testing would focus on improving the metallurgical results in terms of concentrate grade and flake size distribution.

MATAWINIE PROPERTY

The Matawinie Property consists of six group of claims located about 140 km north of Montreal. The claims are contained within a 50 km radius just North of St-Michel-des-Saints in the Matawinie regional county municipality, Province of Québec. Nouveau Monde has an option to acquire 100% interest in the property (see February 12th 2013 press release for details). These claims are located at the Eastern limit of the highly prospective Central Metasedimentary belt of the Grenville geological province, host of the Timcal's Lac des Iles mine, currently Canada's only producing graphite mine. The host rocks in that region are graphitous paragneiss and quartzite.

A summary of the results from the exploration work carried out by Nouveau Monde on the Matawinie property since its acquisition in February 2013 is outlined below:

  • Completion of a regional heliborne MAG-TDEM survey over an area of 60km radius that allowed the definition of roughly 15km of conductive material distributed amongst six claim blocks.
  • Systematic ground follow up prospecting campaign using portable geophysical tool that permitted the discovery of 10 different graphite showings with grade above 5% Cg on the A, D, E and Ti-NOU blocks.
  • The discoveries of the Ti-NOU and Gros-NOU showings in the lac Cousineau area on which five grab samples graded above 15% Cg and are coincident with two conductive anomalies of 2,000m by 250m and 2,000m by 1,000m.
  • 5m long channel sample cut across foliation (open in both directions) in the trench TN-TR01 on the Ti-NOU showing with average grade of 15.16% Cg.
  • Drill hole TN-DH01 sunk on the Ti-NOU showing with an intersection of 17.7m starting at surface grading 12.01% Cg including a section of 13.9m at 13.4% Cg.
