November Housing Starts for the St. John's Area

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2010) - Housing starts in the St. John's region were lower during the month of November, according to preliminary data1 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). November's housing starts totaled 155 throughout the St. John's area versus 176 starts in November of 2009. There were 12 additional starts recorded outside the St. John's area, for a total of 167 provincial urban housing starts compared to 199 last November. Year-to-date, starts remain above 2009 levels, with 1,664 recorded in the St. John's region versus 1,502 last year.

"November's decrease in total starts was due to lower levels of both multiple construction and single-detached housing starts activity," said Chris Janes, senior market analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "New home construction has been slowing in recent months and is expected to continue this trend in December," added Janes.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in November were up five per cent to 14,746 units compared to last year's total of 13,989. Single-detached starts declined 21 per cent to 5,551 units, while multiple starts increased 33 per cent to 9,195 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 653 new units were started in November 2010 compared to 706 units during the same period in 2009.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
