November Housing Starts in Halifax

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2010) - New residential construction in Halifax increased last month compared to November 2009 according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 171 housing starts last month, compared to 96 starts recorded in November 2009. Single-detached starts increased from 68 to 71 units while multiple starts increased from 28 to 100 units.

"November figures were supported by a high level of multiples activity as builders began construction on 59 new apartment units and 41 semi-detached and row units," said Matthew Gilmore, senior market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "In the single-detached market, starts advanced 4.4 per cent last month," Gilmore added.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in November were up five per cent to 14,746 units compared to last year's total of 13,989. Single-detached starts declined 21 per cent to 5,551 units, while multiple starts increased 33 per cent to 9,195 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 653 new units were started in November 2010 compared to 706 units during the same period in 2009.
