November Housing Starts in Prince Edward Island

CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2010) - Residential construction in urban centres of the province decreased last month compared to November 2009, according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data1 indicate that a total of 66 units were started in November 2010 compared to 73 units for the same period last year. 

"The decrease recorded in November marked the second consecutive monthly decline in residential construction activity" said Jason Beaton, market analyst with CMHC in Prince Edward Island. "Multiple starts, on a year-to-date basis, are now 27.9 per cent below 2009 levels, while single-detached starts are down a more modest 5.2 per cent," noted Beaton.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in November were up five per cent to 14,746 units compared to last year's total of 13,989. Single-detached starts declined 21 per cent to 5,551 units, while multiple starts rose 33 per cent to 9,195 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 653 new units were started in November 2010 compared to 706 units during the same period in 2009.
