November Housing Starts Slipped in St. Catharines-Niagara

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2010) - Preliminary data for November 2010 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for the St. Catharines-Niagara Census Metropolitan Area(1) (CMA) show a drop in housing starts to 53 units from 108 units a year earlier.

Housing starts were down in November from the relatively high levels in the same month a year ago. New construction of all four housing types was down. Still, on a year-to-date basis, housing starts were 30 per cent above last year's level. New home construction was largely driven by robust single-detached construction which advanced 31 per cent compared to the same period last year. So far this year, starts were up in all municipalities except Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Port Colborne.

"As resale market activity cooled down over summer and fall, demand for new homes tapered off too," said Ashot Karapetyan, Market Analyst with CMHC. "Starts are still on track to be just under 2007-2008 levels which means that new home construction rebounded to full recovery in 2010," added Karapetyan.
