MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - Dec 6, 2013) - Elance, the leading online work marketplace, today released its November U.S. Employment Report which shows 52,000 new freelance jobs were created and U.S. freelancers earned more than $7 million last month. An estimated one-third of the U.S. workforce is considered to be independent yet this data is not fully captured by the reporting models that generate the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) jobs report.
Freelancer earnings on Elance were up 67 percent over the same period last year, in part fueled by companies scaling up to complete end-of-year projects. Hiring growth continues to be strong year-over-year with the number of companies hiring freelancers up 36 percent. The employment report is derived from Elance's November hiring and payment data for the United States and measures the number of new jobs created, the number of people looking for work and state-level data on hiring and wage growth.
The November U.S. Employment Report details important growth statistics for the independent workforce:
- Government furloughs drove growth in November: Virginia led the states for freelance hiring with 99 percent growth year-over-year and over 1,200 new freelance jobs created.
- Demand for qualified sales and marketing professionals are on the rise: Although IT & programming continue to be the highest-growth categories for freelancers, sales and marketing job categories accounted for 35 percent of new hires -- a 59 percent increase year-over-year.
- States with high unemployment are seeking freelance careers: The number of freelancers looking for work continues to be high in states with unemployment rates above the national average including California (8.7 percent), Illinois (8.9 percent) and North Carolina (8.0 percent).
- Freelancer earnings continue to rise: U.S. Freelancer earnings in the U.S. increased 67 percent compared to last November.
"Freelancer hiring continues to surge in our largest states," says Ved Sinha, vice president of categories at Elance. "The economic impact of the freelance workforce is accelerating and 2014 will bring freelance hiring records in all 50 states."
