NovoDynamics® VERUS™ Middle East OCR to Support Linguistic Studies at University of Sofia in Bulgaria

ANN ARBOR, MI--(Marketwire - May 19, 2010) -  NovoDynamics, Inc., a recognized leader in providing advanced information capture and analysis solutions, today announced that the University "St. Kliment Ohridsky" of Sofia, Bulgaria, will use its VERUS Middle East optical character recognition (OCR) software to support a new research project in Arabic Language and Linguistics. Tsveta Pashova, an Associate Professor of the University's Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies, is directing the two-year project that will use VERUS™ Middle East to create four Arabic text corpora: two of written and two of spoken texts produced by native speakers and learners of Arabic. VERUSMiddle East, a highly advanced OCR solution, will be used to convert scanned pages that contain information written in Arabic into computer searchable text. The research team expects to collect documents from the internet as well as from a variety of printed sources such as text books, fictional writings, academic papers and monographs. The second phase of the project will include the development of a searchable internet site.

"We're very pleased to be a part of this important academic project. The advanced processing capabilities of VERUS will provide significant support to the University in its efforts to expand knowledge and understanding of the Middle East," said David Rock, NovoDynamics' President and CEO. "The University of Sofia's decision to use VERUS™ for this important project highlights the software's breakthrough OCR technology to successfully retrieve critical global language information from both clean and degraded pages."

The Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies at Sofia University is the only academic center in Bulgaria and one of only a few in the Balkans that offer a full-fledged Arabic studies undergraduate program with a special emphasis on teaching Modern Arabic. In addition, it offers a MA program in Arabic Applied Linguistics. "Our project, entitled 'Digital Resources for Learning and Teaching Arabic,' is aimed not only at furthering the teaching of Arabic at Sofia University, but in Bulgaria and the Balkans region as a whole," said Professor Pashova. "This is a very important project for us so we selected VERUS™ Middle East because of its exceptional reputation for being able to efficiently decipher and extract a variety of Middle Eastern languages."

VERUS™ Middle East recognizes Arabic, Persian (Farsi, Dari), Pashto, Urdu, and Hebrew languages, including support for embedded English and French. It automatically detects and cleans degraded and skewed documents, automatically identifies a page's primary language, recognizes a page's fonts without manual intervention, determines whether a page contains manual or handwritten text and allows extracted information to be converted into searchable PDF files.
