Nurses' Float Announces Riders for 2013 Rose Parade ®

"A Healing Place" Float Honors Nurses of the Past, Present and Future for Their Tireless Efforts, Compassion and Care at 2013 Rose Parade ®

PASADENA, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 28, 2012) - On January 1, 2013, nurses will be honored and receive worldwide recognition when the appropriately themed float, "A Healing Place" takes to the historic parade route as part of the 124th Rose Parade ®.

The nurses' float was built entirely with funds raised by the non-profit group "Bare Root, Inc." consisting of five nurses in Southern California who got together in 2007 when they learned that Sally Bixby, RN, would be president of the Tournament of Roses in 2012. The group seized the opportunity to honor nurses worldwide, showcasing the unique characteristics of nurses through the incredibly warm, nature-themed float, "A Healing Place."

"Nurses create 'a healing place' with their presence, anywhere and under any circumstance," said Monica Weisbrich, RN, president of Bare Root, Inc.

The qualities of nurses and characteristics of nursing are reflected in the design of this float with words inscribed on the base: caring, commitment, compassion, confidence, conscientiousness, and intelligence. Nurses bring these qualities to create "a healing place" using wisdom, skill, and versatility to nurture and educate their patients to prevent illness or gently helping them heal.

Today, Bare Root announced the 10 riders will have the opportunity to ride this historic float, representing diverse backgrounds and disciplines. The riders include:

  • Suko Davies, RN, representing Huntington Hospital, Pasadena, CA, Emergency Department

"Our riders were selected because they are all highly respected individuals within their respective institutions and epitomize excellence for the profession. They provide an opportunity to recognize the immense contributions that all nurses make regardless of where they provide patient care," said Weisbrich.

The 2013 Rose Parade theme is "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" inspired by the treasured Dr. Seuss book. Of the theme, Tournament of Roses President Bixby said, "It is meant to encourage all to reach higher than the highest star and to create and explore a world that is full of possibility, rich with imagination, and bursting with discovery."

The future for nursing is bright. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the country will need more than a half a million registered nurses by 2018.

"Our riders represent the current excellence in our field and the future of the profession, and it provides a small look into the vast opportunities that nursing offers," said Weisbrich.

About Bare Root and the Nurses' Float

In 2007 five registered nurses in California formed a non-profit organization, "Bare Root, Inc." to raise money and build a float to honor nursing professionals worldwide for their contributions to their patients and the health of their communities.

2012 will be the first time that a nurse (Sally Bixby, RN) is president of the Tournament of Roses, and only the second time that a woman was named to top role.

To date, Bare Root has raised more than $400,000. One hundred percent of funds raised supported the development of the Nurses' Float, with continued fundraising efforts to create a fund for nursing scholarships.
