According to a report by the research company IC Insight, The top 20 semiconductor suppliers together reported an 8 percent year-on-year increase in first half sales. The research firm argues that a series of economic setbacks -- including the March 11 earthquake in Japan, political uprising in the Middle East, a surge in natural disasters in the US and government debt concerns in North America and Europe -- caused quarterly worldwide economic growth to slow significantly in the first half of 2011 as compared to 2010.

For the remainder of the year, IC Insights forecasts modest growth in the worldwide semiconductor market and expects the 2H11/1H11 semiconductor market to grow only 6 percent, yielding a 5 percent growth rate for the year.
