Citigroup analyst Glen Yeung issued a research note claiming that the summer months started poorly for chip stocks. Yeung said that a continued poor environment for PC sales, and softness in the Chinese market in May, have added to the seasonal weakness that has affected chip stocks this year.

Analysts at Baird say that lead times have come down significantly, with inventories stacking up and demand on the downswing. They argue that if the back-to-school season turns out weaker than expected "we could see a further slowdown in orders in the third quarter."

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang argues that the company has "reinvented itself" and is no longer only a PC graphics company. The company's Tegra line of chips is proving popular with Android tablet and smartphone makers. Most Android 3.x Honeycomb tablet that's available at the moment has a Tegra 2 processor.

At the Computex computer expo this year, AMD discussed its first processor designed specifically for touchscreen tablets.
