NVISION Laser Eye Centers to Conduct Collagen Cross Linking Clinical Trials in Southern California for People With Keratoconus

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 5, 2012) - NVISION Laser Eye Centers is now enrolling patients with Keratoconus in its Collagen Cross Linking Clinical Trial. This is a physician-sponsored clinical trial; for Collagen Cross Linking has not been approved by the FDA in the United States.

According to the National Keratoconus Foundation, Keratoconus, often abbreviated to "KC," is a non-inflammatory eye condition in which the normally round dome-shaped cornea progressively thins causing a cone-like bulge to develop. The result is significant visual impairment, making it difficult to read a book, drive a car or watch TV.

KC is not a common eye disease, but it is by no means rare. It has been estimated to occur in 1 out of every 2,000 persons in the general population. Keratoconus is generally first diagnosed in young people at puberty or in their late teens. It is found in all parts of the United States and the rest of the world. It has no known significant geographic, cultural or social pattern.

"Collagen Cross Linking has been shown, in multiple peer reviewed scientific journal articles, to slow down, and in most cases stop the progression of Keratoconus," says Dr. Tom Tooma, founder of NVISION Laser Eye Centers and the lead investigator for the study. "This treatment will expose the cornea to ultraviolet light (UVA), which strengthens the corneal structure and improves the corneal shape."

To participate in the Collagen Cross Linking clinical study, a pre-operative evaluation is required. Call NVSION Laser Eye Centers at 1-877-91NVISION to find out if you are a candidate.
