NWN Corporation and Cisco Volunteer Efforts Benefit Habitat for Humanity

CINNAMINSON, NJ--(Marketwire - October 25, 2010) -  Once again NWN Corporation of Mount Laurel, NJ and Cisco teamed up to assist Habitat for Humanity. This year the team volunteered their time on River Road in Cinnaminson, NJ. The volunteers included 13 people from both companies.

Some of the volunteers did demolition on the outside of the house, stripping off old layers of wood siding and removing windows while others made sure all of the nails and debris were cleaned up. Inside the house, the rest of the crew built first level support walls and layered the attic floor with 5/8" sheathing so the next team could safely remove the roof.

When it was time to break for lunch the crew from NWN was invited to the Habitat for Humanity's Burlington Office for lunch and a tour of the HFH ReStore. The ReStore is an enterprise of HFH which sells overstocked, discontinued, new and used home furnishings and building materials to the public.

Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to help build houses with families in need. Habitat has built over 135,000 homes around the world, providing over 678,000 people with safe, decent, affordable shelter.

It currently costs about $100,000 to rehabilitate one Habitat house in Burlington County. According to the Affordable Housing Network of New Jersey, building or rehabilitating affordable housing boosts the economy by creating new jobs, helping businesses to relocate to or stay in New Jersey and preserve neighborhoods. They state that decent affordable housing stabilizes families and reduces state expenditures for emergency shelter, health care, education, criminal justice, and other programs. Habitat Burlington County is able to build their houses at a lower cost because they use volunteers, donated and recycled materials which keep operating costs to the bare bones.

For most of the NWN/Cisco Team this was their second year volunteering with HFH. The first-timers said they found the experience rewarding and a great way to spend the day out of the office. Construction Manager Allen McSparron commented he was impressed with the skill levels of the volunteers and the progress the group made on the house. "I found the experience in participating in Habitat for Humanity deeply rewarding both personally and professionally, allowing a true team building experience," observed Matt Himmelstein, Regional Vice President of NWN. Everyone involved said they will volunteer again next year.
