Oakville Student Wins COIN

Tied for third in accounting competition

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 10, 2013) - Robert Chung, of Oakville Trafalgar High School, tied for third place in the 2013 edition of the COIN Competition. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario held its annual competition on May 22 to give high school students considering a career as a Chartered Accountant the opportunity to compete, have fun and earn some cash prizes.

For finishing tied for third, Mr. Chung receives $500 and a plaque. The Institute is matching that $500 prize and giving the funds to Oakville Trafalgar High School's business department. As one of the Ontario students who placed in the top ten of COIN writers, he's also invited to attend an Honour Roll luncheon in Toronto on June 11.

"COIN is a popular Institute initiative to encourage students to consider becoming a Chartered Accountant," said Mona Ghiami, CPA, CA, Director of Career Information at the Institute. "This year 315 students from over 100 high schools across the province participated in this highly competitive contest."

The Institute also announced the other top contest winners from across Ontario. The first place winner received $1,500 and second place finishers earned $1,000, with their respective schools receiving matching amounts. The rest of the Top 10 Honour Roll members each received $100 and an invitation to the awards luncheon.

The Ontario-wide winners are:

  • 1st place All Ontario - Aliraza Sajjad Asrani, Markham District High School, Markham
  • 2nd place All Ontario (Tied) - Qianyu Zhang, L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute, Scarborough
  • 2nd place All Ontario (Tied) - Ahmed Amanullah, Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, Toronto
  • 3rd place All Ontario (Tied) - Robert Chung, Oakville Trafalgar High School, Oakville
  • 3rd place All Ontario (Tied) - Tian Xing Cai, Crescent School, Toronto

To win, the students competed by answering 75-questions at the premises of a firm employing CAs. Think it's easy? Would you know:

  • The principles of revenue recognition?
  • How to assess depreciation?

The 2013 winners knew all that and more.
