Oakwood School Students to Hold Press Conference at Noon Thursday Outside Biltmore Hotel, Will Announce Move of School Prom Due to Labor Dispute

Students Urge Other High Schools to Pull Proms From Boycotted Hotels

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 25, 2005 --

Oakwood High School students Elizabeth Landesberg ('05), Shayna Keller ('05) and Aaron Greenberg ('05). Ms. Landesberg has organized the Oakwood student body to take a stand on an issue in their community and to help the labor movement by respecting their boycott of hotels that do not support the synchronization of workers' contracts.

WHAT: "Students and Workers in Solidarity"

WHEN: Thursday, May 26 at 12 p.m.

WHERE: Pershing Square in front of the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel

Oakwood School in North Hollywood -- a socially progressive independent school -- was originally scheduled to hold its prom at the Biltmore Hotel. Organized by Elizabeth Landesberg, students acted to move the prom to the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood; the Renaissance has agreed to negotiate its union contract in 2006, and is one of the hotels that the union itself recommends that people patronize. The Biltmore is among eight luxury hotels in Los Angeles whose contract expired last April (the others are the Westin Century Plaza, Sheraton Universal, Hyatt Regency Los Angeles, Hyatt Regency West Hollywood, Regent Beverly Wilshire, Westin Bonaventure, and Wilshire Grand Hotel). Oakwood School is one of the only schools in the country -- and the only school in Los Angeles -- to successfully move its prom because of a labor dispute.
