Objective Interface Sponsors SDR Forum's Smart Radio Challenge

Contestants Build Software Defined Radios With ORBexpress Communications Middleware

ORLANDO, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 15, 2006 -- SDR Forum General Meeting and Technical Conference -- Objective Interface Systems, Inc., the leading provider of communications middleware for software defined radios (SDRs), today announced its sponsorship of a design competition for next-generation SDRs. As a Gold sponsor of the SDR Forum's Smart Radio Challenge, Objective Interface is providing its small-footprint, high-performance ORBexpress® communications middleware to student teams developing prototype SDRs that meet rigorous performance and usability standards.

"Many technological breakthroughs have their roots in the ingenuity of university research programs," noted Joe Jacob, senior vice president at Objective Interface Systems. "We believe that the research spurred by this Challenge will generate real-world solutions to problems commonly encountered in SDR design. Objective Interface Systems appreciates the opportunity to deliver the latest and highest quality technology into the hands of students -- who will in turn use creativity and perseverance to turn problems into solutions."

Mr. Jacob added: "The Smart Radio Challenge gives us the opportunity to extend our support of education. Not only do we offer a summer internship and tuition program for select students, every license of ORBexpress includes a three-day training class at no additional charge."

The Smart Radio Challenge requires that student teams build and demonstrate an SDR that addresses problems defined by the SDR Forum and that supports a target waveform or waveforms. After identifying the problems they wish to solve, student teams must design, develop and test a working solution within 10 months. Several prizes will be awarded by the SDR Forum after the development phase. Qualifying teams may continue to compete in subsequent years toward the yearly development prize.

The Smart Radio Challenge is a two-phase process. In Phase 1, the student team must include an explicit work plan, detailing the schedule of milestones and methods planned to achieve each objective or task. The team must include a list of deliverables, including software and hardware documentation and source code, and must outline each team member's credentials.

Phase 2 focuses on the development of a prototype radio system. All final Phase 2 solutions will be demonstrated at the SDR Forum General Meeting and Technical Conference in November 2007 and will be judged on characteristics such as functionality and interoperability; commercial viability; and compliance to code development standards and standardized APIs. About ORBexpress from Objective Interface

ORBexpress is the industry's most widely deployed ORB for SDR. Software Communications Architecture (SCA)-based SDRs are systems that require CORBA for the design and deployment of their radio application. As a small-footprint product, ORBexpress optimizes the use of scarce resources, which is important for small, lightweight, low-power, hand-held radios. As real-time communications middleware, ORBexpress provides the predictability of behavior and reliability required for SDR platforms.

ORBexpress is based on the Real-time CORBA standard that enables real-time and embedded devices in heterogeneous environments to communicate seamlessly. Thousands of customers worldwide have used the ORBexpress communications infrastructure to build more flexible, upgradeable and capable products. Available in C++, Ada and Java, ORBexpress has been recognized as the fastest ORB in the industry in an independent study conducted by Boeing's Phantomworks Group.
