"Obli-Cations" Mean No Rest for the Weary This Holiday Season

Survey Finds One in Three Americans Will Take or Host the "Obligated Family Vacation" This Holiday Season

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Nov 14, 2011) - The Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's holiday periods are among the busiest long-distance travel times of the year according to the Bureau of Travel Statistics. A great majority of these vacations are actually "obli-cations" defined as "any trip taken primarily to be with family or friends for necessary reasons, such as holidays."

As typified in movies such as "Planes, Trains, Automobiles," these trips often result in sleeping conditions ranging from the barely tolerable to the unbearably terrible.

A recent survey conducted by Sleepy's shows that one in three Americans will be taking or hosting an "obli-cation" this holiday season and 68 percent feel their sleeping arrangements will be uncomfortable and/or "not as comfortable as home."

Dr. Michael Breus, the "Sleep Doctor," adds, "You can't promise the turkey will be perfect or you and your brother-in-law won't get into an annual squabble, but you can help make a family get-together less stressful if everyone is well-rested." Dr. Breus also offers these tips to helping avoid bedroom bedlam during family sleepovers:

  • Pack a sleep kit - Eye shades, meditation CD, aromatherapy sprays (lavender or chamomile)
  • Shower or bathe - Studies prove that raising the body temperature (with hot water) and lowering it quickly (with room temperature air) relaxes your muscles and prepares your body for sleep.
  • Clip the drapes shut - "Furnace and air vents are usually directly below the curtains. Clipping them prevents them from separating during the night and letting the early morning sun in."
  • Check the thermostat - Sleep can be disrupted if the room is warmer than 75° F or colder than 54° F.

"Last year the economy dictated 'stay-cations.' This year people may be traveling more yet staying with family and friends during an 'obli-cation,'" says Adam Blank, COO, Sleepy's. "We are dedicated to making this holiday season a relaxed and healthful one by helping provide as many people as possible with a great night's sleep."
