Observing the 3rd Anniversary of the Passing of H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb. 23, 2014) - On Feb 23, 2014, people around the world will gather to honour the life of Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi on the third anniversary of her passing. Shri Mataji, as she was commonly known, was an international spiritual leader and the founder of the worldwide movement Sahaja Yoga. She led a truly extraordinary life and is remembered fondly by the millions of followers of Sahaja Yoga for her compassion, generosity, and powerful message of love and peace.

Shri Mataji was born on March 21, 1923 to a Christian family in a village in Central India. As a young woman, she studied medicine and psychology at the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana and at the Balakram Medical College in Lahore, and was actively involved in India's independence movement. In 1947, she married Chandrika Prasad Srivastava, one of India's most respected and highly ranked civil servants. The couple had two daughters, and after raising her children, Shri Mataji embarked upon what would become her life's work.

In 1970, Shri Mataji founded Sahaja Yoga, a spiritual movement based on the principle that anyone can attain a connection with the spirit within, simply through their desire. Over the next 40 years, Shri Mataji traveled the world tirelessly to share her message with people from all backgrounds and all walks of life. She gave lectures on spirituality and taught the simple meditation techniques that provide peace and balance to the lives of millions around the world today. Shri Mataji never charged money for her teaching, asserting that there could be no monetary value placed on the experience of meditation and that any benefits come from within oneself. Over the years, Shri Mataji also established an international health and wellness centre, a shelter for the destitute, and an international arts academy. For her work, Shri Mataji received the United Nations Peace Medal and was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Today, Sahaja Yoga classes are provided in over 100 countries worldwide and volunteers carry on Shri Mataji's work, providing free meditation classes, as well as personal support and guidance, to anyone who desires to enhance their lives through Sahaja Yoga meditation.
