DALLAS, TX--(Marketwire - October 15, 2008) - Storage Networking World --
Ocarina Networks today announced the
launch of the Ocarina ECOsphere, a partner program designed to help the
world's leading storage manufacturers greatly expand the capacity of their
primary storage solutions.
By leveraging Ocarina's award-winning content-aware optimization solution
for primary storage, vendors such as HP, Data Direct Networks and BlueArc
are able to achieve up to five times better compression results than
standard dedupe or compression alone, and up to a tenfold overall reduction
in data footprints.
"In today's tough economic climate, customers are asking the storage
industry for solutions that extend the value and decrease the cost and
environmental impact of their storage systems," said Murli Thirumale, CEO
of Ocarina Networks. "The ECOsphere program was born from this growing
industry need and allows leading industry vendors to immediately offer
capacity-optimized storage products that deliver up to 90 percent more
space for online data."
Ocarina combines content-aware dedupe and compression for online storage,
offering customers a breakthrough way to manage the explosive growth of
online data. The growth of this kind of data has consistently outpaced the
increase in disk sizes and the decrease in disk prices. As a consequence,
both end users and the storage
industry have been looking for new ways to get out ahead of storage growth,
contain costs, and simplify management.
ECOsphere was developed to meet the unique needs of industry vendors,
including HP, Data Direct Networks, BlueArc, and others. Ocarina's
technology can be integrated or embedded with a range of storage
architectures and works with storage solutions to better respond to broad
horizontal markets, or specific data-intensive vertical markets such as
healthcare, media and entertainment, oil and gas, social networks and
online email, or large eDiscovery or compliance archives.
The ECOsphere At Work
ECOsphere ensures that the Ocarina compression solution is engineered for
the specific architecture, features, and strengths of a given partner's
storage platform. Because each ECOsphere solution results in a
partner-specific Ocarina deliverable, these solutions can be sold not only
as capacity-optimized storage to new customers, but can also be used in the
existing accounts of those vendors who want to add this capability. This
ensures that each ECOsphere partner maximizes the value it receives from
its unique, customized version of Ocarina's technology.
The Ocarina Optimizer and Reader: Tailored Solutions for Vendors
The Ocarina solution has two independent parts, the Ocarina Optimizer and
the Ocarina Reader. The Optimizer is an out-of-band solution that reads
files and applies its patented content-aware subfile deduplication and
content-aware compression to each file, thus dramatically reducing the size
it takes to store that file. The Reader serves as an inline solution
component that can restore files to their bit-for-bit original state in
real time when a file is accessed.
ECOsphere offers the maximum flexibility for partners, depending on the
specific characteristics of their storage hardware. Some foundation
elements of the partner program include:
-- A port of Ocarina's solution tailored to the specific storage
architecture of that vendor, integrating Ocarina with the value add
features of the vendors' storage;
-- A vendor-specific SKU on Ocarina's price sheet that customers can
order to get the vendor-specific value-added version of Ocarina technology
for that particular storage platform;
-- A mutual support agreement, whereby Ocarina and the storage vendor
work together to support joint customers and escalate any issues to ensure
best possible customer satisfaction;
-- Joint testing of the Ocarina solution in the storage vendors' labs
and/or Ocarina's labs, with mutually-agreed validation, using rigorous sets
of tests built and run by Ocarina and/or the storage vendor;
-- Working together in the field, identifying target markets and joint
customer opportunities.
