Official Contest Window for "The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational" Closes; Competitors and Organizers Look Toward 2011/2012 Season

HALF MOON BAY, CA--(Marketwire - March 1, 2011) - The HMB Surf Group Inc., which consists of a group of Maverick's competitors, community members, long-time event coordinators and sponsors, today announced the official contest window for the first annual "The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational" closed today. Due to mild swell conditions, no contest was held this year. The famed big wave surf contest has been held only seven times since the first one in 1999.

"The competitors and organizers are looking for open ocean swells in the 20-foot-plus range that hit the outer reef at Maverick's and are capable of producing monster waves reaching as high as 50 feet. This year, Mother Nature just didn't produce the swell needed to run the event," said Peter Mel, veteran Maverick's competitor and member of the HMB Surf Group. "Nonetheless, this season was still a success for us in that the surfers and community members were able to take back control of the contest and take the time to plan how we would want to run the event. We will take the lessons we learned this year and turn our attention to planning for next year."

Due to the La Nina weather pattern this year, swells did not reach the size required and the much-anticipated "call" was never issued.
