Official Opening of 12 New Affordable Adapted Housing Units for Young Adults Living With an Intellectual or Physical Disability in Sherbrooke

SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Oct. 17, 2016) - Les Habitations Michel Lapierre 3 is celebrating the official opening of its 12-unit affordable rental housing complex for young adults living with an intellectual or physical disability. The complex comprises two buildings, each with 6 units that are fully adapted to the needs of these clients.

This is the first project of its kind in the borough of Fleurimont and the third complex bearing the name of Michel Lapierre in the area. These supportive housing units provide a vibrant and stimulating living environment for their occupants. The two buildings were constructed in a wooded area, and their architectural design with wood and stone facades gives them a distinctive appearance. Each residence has a small community room, and the project is located near public transit.

The ceremony took place today in the presence of Guy Hardy, Member of the National Assembly for Saint-François, on behalf of Martin Coiteux, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montréal region; Robert Y. Pouliot, Acting Mayor of Sherbrooke; and Nathalie Demers, Regional Manager, Quebec Affordable Housing Centre, at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Quick facts

  • Through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ), the governments of Canada and Quebec provided more than $840,000 for the construction of these two buildings, under the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement (IAH 2014-2019).

  • An amount of $24,000 was granted by the Bureau de l'efficacité et de l'innovation énergétiques of the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles to ensure that the buildings would meet Novoclimat certification standards.

  • More than $206,000 in additional financial assistance over five years, assumed by the SHQ (90 per cent) and the City of Sherbrooke (10 per cent), enables all the tenants to benefit from the Rent Supplement program, ensuring that they will not pay more than 25 per cent of their income on housing.

  • This project received significant financial support from Michel Lapierre and the Fondation Han-Logement.
