OFL Supports Equal Marriage as a Basic Human Right

Attention: Assignment Editor, Education Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 21, 2005) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Ontario Federation of Labour's Executive Board reaffirmed the Federation's support for equal marriage rights at its Board meeting today in Toronto and endorsed the Canadians for Equal Marriage (CEM) Campaign.

Canadians for Equal Marriage is the umbrella group working for passage of this legislation. CEM was formed in August 2003 through the efforts of EGALE, the Metropolitan Community Church of Canada, Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG), the United Church of Canada, Canadian Labour Congress, Canadian Federation of Students and many other supporters of marriage equality.

The Federation is calling on Prime Minister Paul Martin to quickly introduce the same-sex marriage bill and pass legislation. "We are also calling on Prime Minister Paul Martin not to have a free vote on this or any other human rights-based legislation," said OFL president Wayne Samuelson.

The OFL and its affiliated unions are supporting the Canadians for Equal Marriage campaign and will actively lobby the federal government to pass legislation on same-sex marriage.
