Ohio Medical Group President Helps Instill Continuing Medical Education for Libyan Physicians

CLEVELAND, OH--(Marketwire - Mar 19, 2013) - North Ohio Heart (NOH), Northeast Ohio's largest private cardiology practice, and Ohio Medical Group (OMG) are proud to support OMG President Othman Shemisa, M.D., Ph.D., [] in his quest to facilitate continuing medical education to Libyan doctors.

After the repressive Gaddafi regime fell in Libya, a way to update practicing physicians on all the advances of surgery and medicine was necessary. "After speaking with Dr. Abdallah Glessa, dean of the medical school and vice president of the University of Benghazi, we thought continuing medical education (CME) seminars may be one of the fastest ways to start the process," Dr. Shemisa, a Libyan American, says. "It won't be sufficient in and of itself, but it is a beginning. It is planting seeds."

The program, conducted November 2012, consisted of five seminars shown over five days, each of which included a different topic with lectures and discussions. The lectures were obtained on videodiscs from American Medical Seminars, a well-known and reputable continuing medical education establishment in the USA.

About 15 physicians ranging from senior medical students to faculty and professors attended each seminar. "Those who attended showed a great deal of interest and enthusiasm for continuing," Dr. Shemisa says. The seminar videos were left for the medical library at the university hospitals in Benghazi so they can be loaned to interested parties.

The next step in the process is to appoint staff in Libya responsible for its continuation. The aim is to have live seminars attended via satellite and then live seminars held on site there so interaction can be more tailored to the Libyan needs. "There are a lot of challenges, a lot of opportunities, and a lot of work to do," Dr. Shemisa says. "It is fortunate we can be part of this transition and help the medical services there through this venue of improving and elevating the medical knowledge of the practicing physicians."
