Ohio Valley General Hospital and Telecare Corporation Join Forces to Develop Innovative Geropsychiatric Inpatient Program

21-Bed Inpatient Acute Unit Scheduled for March 2011 Opening

PITTSBURGH, PA--(Marketwire - June 14, 2010) - As the number of Americans over age 65 increases -- it is expected to more than double by 2030 -- so does the need for both acute medical and mental health services. Older adults not only experience high rates of chronic disease, but also significant mental illness that is often untreated or mistakenly viewed as a normal part of the aging process. In keeping with Ohio Valley General Hospital's (OVGH) commitment to addressing the needs of older adults in the community, it is partnering with Telecare Corporation to develop a 21-bed inpatient acute geropsychiatric unit, scheduled for opening March 2011.

"This new program will be a cornerstone for our efforts to provide older adults in the community with a full range of inpatient and outpatient mental health care services," said William Provenzano, FACHE, President and CEO of Ohio Valley General Hospital. "We are fortunate to have Telecare, nationally recognized for its expertise in the management of mental health services, as a partner."

Located on the campus of OVGH, the geropsychiatric unit will be focused exclusively on elderly patients. Patient care will be tailored to the unique needs of the elderly in a safe environment. Co-morbid medical conditions and polypharmacy issues can be addressed easily in OVGH's acute hospital setting.

Telecare will provide onsite program management, including a program director, community relations coordinator and medical director who will oversee clinical operations and community outreach. Ohio Valley staff will comprise the majority of the multi-disciplinary clinical team. Coverage for qualified patients is reimbursed through Medicare's inpatient psychiatric facilities prospective payment program and other insurance plans.

"We look forward to sharing our expertise with OVGH's progressive leadership as we collaborate to bring this vital service to Pittsburgh's western suburbs," said Anne Bakar, President and CEO of Telecare Corporation. "The need for specialized geropsychiatric services is growing and Telecare's experience combined with OVGH's commitment to the needs of older adults will make this a model program for the region."

Telecare's acute inpatient programs are based on the Recovery-Centered Clinical System (RCCS), developed by Telecare as a framework to support each individual's recovery process, while maintaining health, safety and managing risk. RCCS integrates evidence-based practice with recovery principles that support older adults' ability to maintain independence and have vibrant, full lives.

Six percent of Americans age 65 and over have a diagnosable depressive illness. Older adults also have among the highest rates of suicide, relative to other age groups. "The mental health needs of older adults are often associated with chronic disease, loss, isolation or other impairments not faced by younger individuals. Clearly, these unique needs warrant specially trained staff and an environment where both medical and psychiatric needs can be met," said Provenzano.

Ohio Valley General Hospital is a private, community-owned hospital, located in Kennedy Township, PA. It serves families in Pittsburgh's western suburbs including Kennedy, Robinson, Moon, North Fayette and Findlay. Many patients also live in McKees Rocks, Oakdale, Crafton, Ingram, Imperial and Coraopolis. For more information about OVGH, visit
