Okta Increases Developer Productivity by 80% Using Sauce Labs

Sauce Labs' Automated Cross-Browser Application Testing Solutions Reduces Testing Time for the Leading Cloud-Based Identity Management Provider From 24 Hours to Just Minutes

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 25, 2013) - Sauce Labs Inc, the leading provider of cloud-based mobile and web application testing solutions for software developers, today announced that Okta boosted developer productivity by 80 percent after adopting Sauce Labs' Selenium-based test cloud. Working with Sauce Labs also slashed the time spent waiting for core tests to run, shortening Okta's key test suite from 24 hours to 10 minutes.

Okta provides enterprise-grade identity management service to more than 300 enterprises -- representing millions of users worldwide -- through a cloud-based system that must be tested against browser-operating system combinations, including both desktop and mobile platforms. Prior to working with Sauce Labs, Okta was using a local Selenium RC server running browser tests sequentially that resulted in developers spending up to 50 percent of their time on test debugging. The result was a process and testing environment that was incredibly expensive to maintain, resulting in a very low ROI.

"Working with Sauce Labs means we're better able to stay at the forefront of development innovation," said Denali Lumma, quality-engineering manager at Okta. "We are growing and adding new features and products rapidly and need a product that can test them in a matter of hours or minutes, not days. Sauce Labs gave us everything we were looking for in a testing solution."

Future is Automated Testing

"Okta is at the forefront of automated testing and realizing the tremendous value in utilizing developer resources more efficiently," said John Dunham, CEO of Sauce Labs. "As a leader in automated application testing, we value forward-thinking partners like Okta as we continue to innovate and deliver solutions that help ensure companies deliver better-performing software in a cost-effective manner."

By using Sauce Labs, Okta was able to reduce its overall Selenium test debugging time from a few days to a matter of hours, thanks to Sauce's test videos, screenshots and logging capabilities, which resulted in a huge increase in developer productivity. Okta is a fast-growing company with customers relying on its secure, cloud-based system to manage application identities across desktop, on-premises and mobile apps. Quality and uptime are paramount to Okta's success in the enterprise space and its quality engineering team knew the only way to ensure true quality at scale was with test automation.

"In deploying Sauce Labs we have reduced the time it takes to just debug Selenium from three days to three hours," said Lumma. "Moving our testing system to the cloud also reduced the cost of hardware, electricity and labor. The biggest ROI increase, however, was in developer productivity."

Sauce Labs offers a cloud of mobile platforms and desktop browsers for automated and manual testing of web and mobile apps. The company's software-as-a-service (SaaS) application is used by some of the largest consumer and enterprise brands. The Sauce testing cloud is already used to run approximately six million tests each month with that number continuing to grow.
