Older Homeowners Choosing Remodeling Over Moving

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 6, 2015) - A recent study by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University shows that many of our baby boomer generation are choosing to remodel their homes than move. Abbe Willie a research analyst on the Harvard research project said the trend is to remodel instead of incurring the expenses of moving. Another reason is the fact that there is a growing population of those over 55 years of age and the number of adults over 65 will increase by 35 percent by the year 2020.

Sergei Kaminskiy, owner of Kaminskiy Design and Remodeling, says, "Many of our baby-boomer and older clientele are choosing to remodel their homes instead of moving, many are focusing on accessibility and opening up the home. We are seeing many remove a room or two and opening the size of the main living areas with a kitchen remodel and the master bedroom remodel." Some of the improvements that should be considered by our older generations is widening of the hallways, expanding the size of the kitchen and living areas so you can have easy mobility in the event a wheelchair is necessary. Many are also focusing on bathroom remodels and including accessibility for the bathrooms and bathing.

Sergei says, "We have had a number of clients remove a formal dining room or child's bedroom on main floor and convert it to another master bedroom with fully accessible bathroom." This gives someone that is in a wheelchair the ability to access everything on main floor of home without any difficulty.

Most of our baby boomers are choosing a home remodel for the following, but are also considering accessibility in their home remodel designs as they age:

  • Increasing the home's value
  • Updating appliances and home energy efficiency
  • Increasing the appeal of the home
  • Home Improvement loans at all-time low rates

For many aging adults moving is simply difficult, they have roots in their community and memories that they don't want to leave behind. Sergei says, "Many of our clients, when they compare moving to remodeling, the home remodel simply makes more sense. By the time you factor the moving costs, the closing costs of selling and buying a new home, remodeling simply makes more sense."
