Photography News: Olympus Unveils the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lens, a 1.4x Teleconverter, and a Silver OM-D E-M1, Along With a Version 2.0 Firmware Update

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - September 15, 2014) - B&H Photo would like to share Olympus's announcement of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm PRO Lens, the MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter, a silver OM-D E-M1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera, and a version 2.0 firmware update that adds full tethering support, a Live Composite mode, and perspective correction. Each of these items works to expand the scope and capabilities of Olympus's Micro Four Thirds camera system.

Joining the PRO lens line, the Olympus 40-150mm features a constant f/2.8 aperture, as well as a rugged metal lens barrel that is dust-, water-, and freeze-proof. It offers a far-reaching 80-300mm equivalent focal length, which can be extended to 420mm through the use of the Olympus MC-14 1.4x teleconverter. Also, the lens has an industry-first Dual VCM (Voice Coil Motor) autofocus system that involves moving two lens groups with individual drive motors for quick and quiet focusing. Additionally, focusing performance is further enhanced by a Manual Focus Clutch for fast switching between auto and manual focusing. Additional features include a rotatable tripod collar, a programmable L-Fn button, and a dedicated LH-76 Lens Hood that can collapse on the lens for storage.

The optical design -- which employs a floating element mechanism -- comprises 16 elements in 10 groups, and includes a host of low dispersion, aspherical, and high-refractive index elements. These specialized elements help to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range, and maintain a compact overall form factor as well. A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has also been applied to lens surfaces to suppress lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.

Currently, the Olympus MC-14 1.4x teleconverter is only compatible with the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens, where it offers full compatibility and electronic communication. Using the teleconverter will result in 1 stop of light loss; however, with the f/2.8 aperture and modern cameras' high ISO capabilities, this should not be an issue. Additionally, Olympus is releasing a new ZUIKO PRO line of protection filters, in 62mm and 72mm sizes, which feature a black anodized aluminum frame, high-quality optical glass, and the same ZERO coating found on the lenses.

Alongside the release of a new silver OM-D E-M1 mirrorless camera is firmware version 2.0, available via electronic download, which aims to add a variety of new features and operability enhancements, including tethered shooting support, reduced viewfinder lag times, new shooting modes and effects, and an updated Olympus Image Share mobile app.
