Omega Protein Publishes 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Demonstrates Continued Commitment to Communities, Product Integrity and the Environment

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - May 02, 2016) - Omega Protein Corporation (NYSE: OME), a nutritional product company and leading integrated provider of specialty oils and protein products, details its strong record of conscientious practices at length in its 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Report. The report outlines the Company's efforts to serve its communities, conserve natural resources and expand research into the role of omega-3s in human health.

"Operating a productive, responsible business is a top priority at Omega Protein, and becoming a company that truly improves the world is more than just dollars and cents," Omega Protein President and CEO Bret Scholtes said. "Leaving the world a better place requires us to take action through constant improvements in all facets of our business."

The report highlights Omega Protein's dedication to its employees' well-being, safety and growth. A prime example is the Company's Education Assistance Program, which financially supports employees who want to further their educational goals. The program provides tuition reimbursement for courses taken at accredited institutions, and is designed for employees to customize their education to fit their lifestyle.

Omega Protein proudly serves its local communities. For instance, the state of Louisiana honored the Company's Abbeville, Louisiana facility, in part for its efforts in funding charities that benefit area schools, local first responders and the U.S. Coast Guard Foundation. Company employees are equally active in their communities. Employees at the Reedville, Virginia facility have partnered with Northern Neck Food Bank to collect nearly three tons of unharvested farm produce to feed those in need. Employees in Houston volunteer at the Houston Food Bank, the largest Feeding America food bank in the country. And workers from the Moss Point, Mississippi plant and shipyard regularly volunteer and support their local soup kitchen, Our Daily Bread.

The report illustrates how Omega Protein has continued its longstanding commitment to conservation through habitat restoration programs and eco-friendly practices. In 2015, the Company offered its decommissioned fishing vessel, the Barataria Bay, to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources to serve as an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico. The Barataria Bay was the third Omega Protein vessel donated to the artificial reef program, which creates habitats for diverse fish species.

The Company also developed processes to save 18 million gallons of water and 268,000 gallons of propane a year at its processing facilities, and dramatically reduced sulfur dioxide, particulates, and mono-nitrogen oxide emissions by 95 percent over seven years at its Reedville, Virginia plant. In Reedsburg, Wisconsin, the Company aids local dairy farmers by recycling byproduct from whey protein into animal feed in order to reduce waste which could be used for feed.

Omega Protein remains committed to ensuring the traceability of its products. The Company's 'boat to batch' program, in which it tracks fish oil from its vessels to its refineries, guarantees product integrity throughout every step of the supply chain. Similarly, the Company ensures the responsible production of borage oil, which promotes cardiovascular, joint and skin health. Omega Protein has fostered strong relationships with borage growers by providing them with high-quality seeds, offering them advice during the growing season and buying back seeds after harvest to support high seed quality the following season.

The Company values research and innovation locally and around the world. The Company's facilities partner with organizations that support research on cancer, Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease. Omega Protein has also sponsored research that demonstrates the positive effects of omega-3 fatty acids EPA, DPA and DHA, and it has partnered with leading industry groups, including the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL), to better understand the health benefits of fatty acids.
