Michael Nobrega, President and CEO of OMERS, has been appointed Chair of Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Board of Directors. The two-year appointment was confirmed by the board at its Annual General Meeting on Oct. 23.
Mr. Nobrega has served on the board since 2007 and replaces outgoing board chair Sean Conway who had held the position since 2010.
"It's an honour to be named Chair of OCE's Board," Mr. Nobrega said. "OCE has firmly established itself as a leader in innovation, collaboration and business excellence and I'm looking forward to chairing the board as we create new opportunities to grow Ontario's economy and find more ways to expand the commercialization of research."
Mr. Nobrega was appointed President and CEO of OMERS in 2007 after serving as President and CEO of Borealis Infrastructure, a wholly-owned subsidiary of OMERS, from 1998-2007.
Mr. Nobrega holds an Honours BA from the University of Toronto and a chartered accountancy designation from the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and Canada. He is former tax partner of Arthur Andersen. In 2009, he was named a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accounts of Ontario and, in 2002, he received the Arbor Award from the University of Toronto for outstanding community service.
The Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance of OCE and is composed of distinguished individuals drawn from the Canadian business, research and professional communities.
Mr. Conway, a former Ontario Cabinet Minister and public policy advisor who has served on the OCE Board since 2004, said he is proud to have served on the board.
"OCE is critical to helping Ontario become a world-leader in new technologies and a key player in the knowledge economy," he said. "I am confident the new board, under Mr. Nobrega's leadership, will continue to both move OCE forward and enhance the province's prosperity."
OCE President and CEO Dr. Tom Corr thanked Mr. Conway for his years of service with the board and looked forward to welcoming Mr. Nobrega as Chair.
"We have some amazing things happening at OCE that are a testament to Mr. Conway's leadership," said Dr. Corr. "Mr. Nobrega's experience and expertise both professionally and with OCE will be an incredible asset to the board going forward."
