On The Money on Gwinnett Business RadioX Features Imperial Investments Group

Nitin Shah Discusses Changes in the Hotel Industry

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - January 14, 2015) - On December 11th, 2014, On The Money welcomed to the studio Nitin Shah with Imperial Investments Group. Host Joe Moss discussed the challenges and rewards of working in the hotel industry.

Shah serves as president of Imperial Investments Group, a hospitality company founded in Georgia. He is also chairman and CEO of Embassy National Bank, a leading lender to small businesses in the United States.

Building new hotels has become a thing of the past with construction costs shooting through the roof. Existing hotels are doing very well, even during this time of change, but it is difficult for new hotels to thrive in today's economy. According to Shah, the best thing to do is to buy existing property and fix it up to avoid construction contracts and costs. Shah deals with the mid-size franchise hotels and discusses the shift happening within the hotel industry. Many hotel owners are beginning to make rooms available on Air B&B (bed and breakfast) to avoid the hotel/motel tax.

"In a sense it's a threat to the hotel industry," says Shah. "It's really hurting the hotel industry because they are not paying hotel/motel tax. So we are unfairly treated and, in terms, paying 15% sometimes even 20% tax in New York. And you could stay at someone's house and pay 20% less even for the same rate! So Air B&B's are becoming the Uber of hotel service."

Small businesses do need a lot of help. Shah never received federal assistance and is immensely proud of this. Imperial Investments Group will be using this as a marketing tool going forward.
