On Veterans Day and Every Day, Goodwill Puts Vets to Work

Successful Efforts Require Holistic Approach

ROCKVILLE, MD--(Marketwire - November 11, 2008) - Goodwill Industries International is leading the effort among community service organizations helping veterans find meaningful work. At Goodwill, we know it takes more than a strong work ethic to be relevant in today's work force; it takes a "whole person" approach to find and keep a good job.

"Often when veterans return to civilian life the transition is difficult, and they are left to face a complex set of issues including psychological disorders, homelessness and unemployment," says Jim Gibbons, President and CEO, Goodwill Industries International. "Goodwill's holistic approach to providing services to veterans hinges on developing and maintaining working partnerships with other service providers to meet the multiple needs of the veteran seeking services."

Goodwill is helping people like United States Army veteran Anthony Williams, who has been homeless, addicted to illegal substances and faced isolation due to the lack of a family support system. In September 2007, Williams came to Goodwill Houston's Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program and began working with the program staff to turn his life around. He attended recovery meetings to treat his addiction and became inspired to make the effort to find a job. With Goodwill's help, he found work at a distribution warehouse. Today, Williams continues to earn the commendation of his supervisors as an outstanding employee, and he also serves as a spokesperson for issues affecting him and other homeless veterans.

"We are reminded this Veterans Day that a good paying job and workplace success opens doors and brings opportunity in life, and also helps drive our nation's economy," says Gibbons. "When you donate to Goodwill or shop in Goodwill stores, you are investing in our nation's veterans so that people like Anthony Williams can earn a paycheck, support their families and contribute to the economic health of our country."
