One-in-Ten (12%) GTAers have Cheated on Significant Other or Spouse

The September Leger Marketing-Toronto Life Poll on Dating, Cheating, & Happiness in the GTA Attention: Assignment Editor, Lifestyle Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ON--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 14, 2005) - For the September Edition of Leger Marketing's monthly back-page poll for
Toronto Life Magazine, residents of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) were
surveyed about their personal relationships - with a focus on dating,
cheating, and happiness. Most interestingly, more than one-in ten (12%) GTA
residents say that they have cheated on a monogamous partner or spouse, and
another 11% refuse to answer. In a related finding, 9% say that they have
had an affair with someone who was married. Notably, six-in-ten (62%) say
that they can be truly happy without a serious monagamous relationship,
including more than half (53%) of those who are married.

Among the dating/meeting methods tested, blind dates and being set up by
friends (34%) is the most popular, followed by dating co-workers (17%).
Smaller, and younger, proportions use online (9%) dating services,
non-online dating services (3%), and speed dating events (1%).

From June 21 to 27, 2005, Leger Marketing - the Canadian representative of the Gallup International Association - conducted telephone interviews among a randomly selected, representative sample of 500 adult residents of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The margin of error for the total sample is +/-4.4%, 19 times out of 20. The City of Toronto (n=250) and Suburban (n=250) sub-segments of the total GTA sample each have an associated margin of error of +/-6.2%, 19 times out of 20. The Suburban sub-segment is comprised of the Regions of Durham, Halton, Peel, and York. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current regional, gender, and age Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of the GTA. Any discrepancies in totals are due to rounding.
