One Million Downloads Shifts Into High Gear

Canada's pre-eminent automotive site marks a digital milestone for its must-have app

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 7, 2013) - Canada's largest online automotive marketplace has now also become the country's most popular mobile app for buying and selling new and used vehicles. marks a milestone this month after having surpassed one million downloads for its free, top-rated app for iPhone and iPad (rated 4.5 stars on the App Store) and achieving the #1 position on the Lifestyle chart. Combined with its apps for other supported platforms including Android and BlackBerry 10, the digital car marketplace now counts more than 1.4 million downloads in total.

MacDonald says that over one third (34 per cent) of visitors now access car listings via the app or the mobile site-well over the industry average of approximately 20 per cent. Bolstering its range of digital offerings has contributed to doubling its year-over-year total visits, logging almost 10 million across all platforms in July 2013.

The app includes a comprehensive list of features that have helped make it a must-have for mobile. Users can search a marketplace of over 400,000 vehicles, as well as browse through over 25,000 Owner Reviews for the straight facts from actual Canadian car owners. The app allows sellers to place free ads and manage their accounts through Facebook and other social sites, while a virtual My Garage feature lets buyers save listings to their account to view them later on. MacDonald says mobile is of particular importance because of the nature of autoTRADER's industry. "Car buying is one transaction that even in this digital world, still has to be done in person most of the time. Mobile allows our brand to be with the consumer throughout their entire buying cycle, be it at home browsing reviews, or on the dealer's lot comparing prices."

Development at TRADER Corporation is an in-house effort, overseen by VP of Technology Allen Wales, who says the Vancouver-based technology team is investing heavily in mobile apps for both dealers and consumers. "Clearly, our hard work is paying off, with significant volumes of downloads yielding very positive reviews," he says. Marking one million downloads for the app for iPhone and iPad alone, adds MacDonald, is made even more notable when Canadians consider that the site has made a complete transition from being a hard copy magazine in the 1980s and 90s, to a 100 per cent digital offering today.
