O'Neill Europe Selects Data Domain

O'Neil, the Original Californian Surf, Snow and Lifestyle Brand, Now "Surfing" Through Backups and Restores at Five Locations

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - April 28, 2008) - Data Domain (NASDAQ: DDUP), the leading provider of deduplication storage systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced O'Neill Europe has implemented Data Domain systems at five sites across Europe. By using Data Domain systems, the Netherlands-based company has streamlined its backup and restore processes, reduced its reliance on tape and tape transportation services, lowered administrative overhead and extended its onsite backup data retention time to a full year.

O'Neill is currently protecting over 57 terabytes of data, which includes virtualized VMware data, using just 3 terabytes of Data Domain system disk capacity. Peter Maljaars, Global IT Service and Infrastructure Manager at O'Neill Europe, said, "By achieving a compression rate of 18x, we can now store and backup more data with less hardware. We can also instantaneously verify that our data is available for quick restores. We know we have plenty of room to scale our systems as our data grows, and we will eventually have a unified, fully automated data protection process across our offices."

Prior to implementing its Data Domain systems, O'Neill's European locations were using multiple disparate tape-based backup systems. Elongated backup window timing at the headquarters location was becoming a concern and as the O'Neill's new Dutch owners made plans for further expansion of the brand, the O'Neill IT staff knew they needed to increase the speed and reliability of restores and establish a bullet-proof disaster recovery strategy across their locations. "We needed a system that could solve our current backup issues and grow with us," said Maljaars. "It became clear to us that our tape systems were rapidly running out of gas. We wanted to re-invent our data protection systems and take a more global approach."

"O'Neill Europe has done a great job of deploying a multi-site data protection system that is well mapped to meet the needs of a growing distributed enterprise with an international focus," said Beth White, vice president of marketing at Data Domain. "The issues O'Neill faced with their legacy tape systems are not unique as enterprises continue to wrestle with the fallout of data growth and its resulting impact on backup and disaster recovery processes. Users are looking to simplify their data protection processes, and add the capability for faster more reliable backups and the ability to restore from disk."

O'Neill's Maljaars also cites ease of implementation as a key Data Domain strength, noting that the first Data Domain system installed at its headquarters was up and running backups on installation day. With its backup and restore processes under control, the company's next step is to deploy cross replication between its sites to establish an enterprise-wide network-based disaster recovery capability. "As we deploy replication between headquarters and our remote sites, the Data Domain value proposition just increases," adds Maljaars.
