OnePoint Patient Care Makes $1.5 Million Gift to University of Iowa's College of Pharmacy to Encourage National Hospice and Palliative Care Pharmacy Education

Donation Establishes Professorship in Hospice and Palliative Care and Provides Residency Opportunities for Pharmacy Students in OnePoint's Hospice Pharmacies

CHICAGO, IL and IOWA CITY, IA--(Marketwired - March 31, 2015) - OnePoint Patient Care, the nation's leading provider of community-based hospice pharmacy and pharmacy benefit management services, has made a donation of $1.5 million to the University of Iowa's College of Pharmacy to fund a professorship in hospice and palliative care pharmacy.

The gift, which was announced in 2014 and recently finalized, will also provide UI College of Pharmacy students the opportunity to participate in rotations at OnePoint's Arizona and Illinois hospice pharmacies, where they will conduct research and gain hands-on experience serving OnePoint's hospice partners.

"With the continuing growth in the field of hospice and palliative care nationwide, there is a real need to advance hospice pharmacy education so we can meet the accelerating need for end-of-life care professionals," says James A. Otterbeck, chairman of OnePoint Patient Care and a University of Iowa alumnus. "At OnePoint Patient Care, we understand the value of education for the future of hospice. It is our hope that this first-of-its-kind position will help create a world-class UI specialty in hospice and palliative care pharmacy that brings about significant advancements in the field."

The James A. Otterbeck OnePoint Patient Care Professorship in Hospice and Palliative Care will begin during the 2015-2016 academic year. Integrated into the program will be opportunities for UI College of Pharmacy students to participate in rotations at the Arizona and Illinois OnePoint pharmacies, where they will gain invaluable experience working in the pharmacies, conducting research centered on hospice and palliative care, and working on site with established OnePoint hospice partners.

"Our college is extremely grateful to Mr. Otterbeck for his generosity and vision," says Donald Letendre, dean of the UI College of Pharmacy. "Establishing a professorship in hospice and palliative care in the UI College of Pharmacy will help emphasize, throughout all of the university's health-care disciplines, the importance of education, training and research for end-of-life care. Thanks to Jim's loyalty and commitment, we look forward to becoming a national leader in serving patients and their families in this critical health-care specialty."
