Onera Selects Fortinet to Address Unique Security Performance Requirements

French National Aerospace and Defense Center Chooses FortiGate™-3810A Security Appliance to Deliver 10 Gbps of Firewall Performance

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - December 4, 2007) - Fortinet® -- the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions -- today announced that Onera, the French national aerospace and defense research & technology organization, has selected Fortinet's FortiGate™-3810A multi-threat security appliance to provide firewall protection to the 10-Gbps network set up between its headquarters and a new remote research center.

Onera's research supports the competitiveness and innovation of France's aerospace and defense industries and has contributed to many benchmarks, including Ariane 5 space rocket, Airbus, Eurocopter helicopters and the Rafale combat aircraft. When Onera decided to move its research engineers in charge of aerodynamic simulations from its headquarters located in Châtillon, France to their new building in Meudon, France, the company decided to increase its network bandwidth for higher performance. The engineers' supercomputers to be located in Meudon would remain connected to data centers based in Châtillon for file transfer, remote high-speed visualization and personal workstation virtualization, so Onera had to upgrade the bandwidth between the two sites from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps to maintain a similar work environment for its engineers.

Maintaining strong network security with such high data throughput requirements between both locations was another challenge for Onera. As the company was already using Fortinet solutions to secure communications at its headquarters and with its eight remote offices, the IT department decided to test the capabilities of Fortinet's FortiGate-3810A, specifically designed to enable wire-speed firewall.

"Only a few vendors can provide security appliances with such high firewall performance," said Sylvain Meunier, network architect at Onera. "We were very happy with the high level of security, service reliability and cost-effectiveness provided by Fortinet's solutions, so it was a natural progression to look at Fortinet's recently introduced enterprise security appliance. The tests conducted on the FortiGate-3810A proved that Fortinet's new system addressed our high network bandwidth and security performance requirements."

Onera had already chosen multiple Fortinet FortiGate multi-threat security appliances to provide secure remote access via VPNs between its headquarters and its eight remote sites in France, at connections up to 100 Mbps, as well as to provide complete network security, including firewall, antivirus and intrusion protection. The addition of the FortiGate-3810A appliance to the current network security deployment was seamless.

The FortiGate-3810A appliance was designed to help address the increasing bandwidth and security performance requirements for next-generation network environments. The appliance is highly scalable and has high performance -- delivering up to 26 Gbps of firewall performance, several times that of competitive offerings. It is ideally suited for network core and data center deployments, and also helps address the stringent requirements of service providers seeking to build service offerings based on the FortiGate platform.

"Service providers and enterprises, such as Onera, expand their networks and adopt bandwidth-hungry applications to meet their increasing needs for capacity and performance," said Andre Stewart, Fortinet's EMEA vice president. "Our new FortiGate-3000 Series appliances were built with the latest hardware technologies to meet those specific requirements, giving us a real price/performance edge on competition. With appliances like the FortiGate-3810A, we're ready to be tested against any high-end firewall vendors."
