Online Consumers Motivated by Free Shipping and Black Friday/Cyber Monday Deals

Unicast's "Holiday Online Shopping Report" Fall 2010 Shows Americans Will Compare Prices; Search for Online Discounts; and Demand Free Shipping From Retailers This Holiday Season

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - November 18, 2010) - With some of the busiest shopping days right around the corner, consumers are logging on for savings this gift-giving season. Unicast (www.unicast.com), a leader in online interactive rich-media and video advertising solutions, today announced the results of a commissioned report on holiday online shopping, which revealed that a majority of consumers surveyed plan to leverage the Internet this year to research deals and find coupons. 

"This holiday season, people are using the Internet for three main reasons: to compare deals between stores or retailers' websites; to search for free shipping; and to find sales offers, discounts, or special promotion codes," said Bryan Hjelm, VP of product and marketing for Unicast. "Advertisers are listening to consumers by incorporating deals, free shipping and offers in their rich media ads as well as adding social media formats and features so consumers can share these deals and offers with their friends." 

Unicast's "Holiday Online Shopping Report," which polled more than 1,000 men and women over the age of 18, found 77% of Americans plan to shop online this year and 54% are most likely to interact with ads that include sales offers, discounts, or special promotion codes. 63% of respondents reported they were motivated to purchase by the offer of free shipping.

Key findings from the report include:

This holiday season, American's plan to use the Internet to (respondents could select two):

  • 53% - Compare deals between stores or retailers' websites
  • 52% - Search for savings codes and coupons
  • 42% - Research Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday sales
  • 37% - Shop on Free Shipping Day*
  • 31% - Shop on Cyber Monday

Respondents were most motivated to purchase by (respondents could select two):

  • 63% - Free shipping
  • 21% - Coupons for a percentage off one item selected by the shopper
  • 20% - Gift card with purchase
  • 17% - Sale items determined by the retailer
  • 15% - A large variety or products
  • 13% - Free returns
  • 9% - Brand name items
  • 6% - Special discounts for retail club members or those on a retailer's e-mail list

Among those polled, the type of online ads most interacted with featured:

  • 54% - Sales offers, discounts, or special promotion codes
  • 29% - A chance to win a prize
  • 23% - Customization to include local information, like retail locations in the respondent's area
  • 10% - Entertaining video
  • 6% - A survey or quiz
  • 6% - A pop-up with new information and a link to the company website
  • 5% - Social media or chat format that allows you to ask or share opinions
  • 4% - Exclusive downloadable content 

Unicast's "Holiday Online Shopping Report" Fall 2010 was conducted Nov. 8-10 by the polling company™, inc. The online survey queried 1,054 Americans age 18+.

*Free Shipping Day is a one-day event held each December involving hundreds of online retailers who offer free shipping with delivery by Christmas Eve. This year's event begins at 12 a.m. ET on Friday, December 17 and ends at 12 a.m. ET December 18.
