Online Holiday Shopping to Be a Small Business Windfall

Nearly One in Three Small Business Owners Expect More Than a Quarter of Their Holiday Sales to Be Online

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - November 20, 2014) - Cyber Monday, one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, kicks off in only a couple of weeks, and small businesses across the US are poised to cash in, according to a new survey from Duda. Nearly one in three (30 percent) small business owners surveyed expect at least a quarter of their holiday sales happen online -- with 14 percent expecting more than half of their holiday revenue from their websites.

"It's not just big companies like Amazon that are going to benefit from online sales this holiday season," said Itai Sadan, co-founder and CEO of Duda, a leading DIY website builder for web professionals and small businesses. "Small businesses across the country, especially those that have prioritized their online presence, stand to gain a lot of revenue given the increasing desire by consumers to bypass in-store lines and shop online."

"In addition to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday -- this year on November 29 -- is a great time for consumers to support their local small businesses," added Sadan. "It's important for shoppers to remember that they can often support local small businesses while still shopping online."

The survey was developed by Duda and conducted by an independent, third-party research firm. Results are based on responses from 440 small business owners of companies with fewer than 100 employees across the United States.

While it might seem a bit late in the game, Sadan offers these easy to implement website tricks to help small businesses increase their online sales this holiday season.

Add a coupon. A coupon or discount code is an easy way to attract attention to a specific product or group of products. Also, everyone likes to get a good bargain, so adding a coupon is a great way to seal the deal with people browsing the site.

Make it social. Adding social sharing buttons to a website is a simple step that can dramatically its increase traffic. By coupling social sharing buttons with a great discount or coupon, people are even more likely to share information about your business. Advanced users can even create a special promotion offering a discount to those who share on social media.

Think like a billboard. Think about what it is you want your customers to do on your website. Do you want them to buy a specific product? Do you want them to browse a specific group of products? Or do you want them sharing information about your business across social media? Whatever that goal is, create a large, specific call-to-action, and place it prominently on your small business' homepage. Make sure your CTA directly links to whichever action you're asking your customer to take.

Make it dynamic. The days following Thanksgiving are something akin to the Holy Grail for businesses, and each has its own focus: from Black Friday to Small Business Saturday and Cyber-Monday, small businesses should make sure their websites reflect the specific shopping day. Using a dynamic template and holiday themed website assets like those offered by Duda this holiday season are an easy way to get started.
