Online ID Pioneer miiCard Participates in NSTIC Pilot for State of North Carolina eID Program

miiCard Digital Passport to Demonstrate Commercial Viability of Trusted Online Identities in the State of North Carolina and MorphoTrust Led Partnership

ST. LOUIS, MO--(Marketwired - Sep 17, 2014) - Bring Your Own Identity (BYOID) provider miiCard today announced it was selected to participate in a White House National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) pilot. The project, worth $1.47 million, is led by MorphoTrust for the state of North Carolina to prove the security and application of an electronic ID (eID) as the online equivalent to a state-issued driver's license. miiCard's digital passport technology will help demonstrate the extensibility of the eID when used for other commercial services.

miiCard delivers trust online through the only global consumer centric identity service that follows the NSTIC guiding principles of privacy, security, interoperability and viability. As part of this pilot project, North Carolina residents will be able to use their MorphoTrust issued eID as the proof of identity necessary to obtain a miiCard. This miiCard reusable digital passport then extends the credentials of the eID for other commercial services, including web-based mortgage applications, access to electronic personal health records, or other high value online transactions. This capability replaces having to physically apply for services or scan and send electronic versions of a driver's license.

Today, miiCard requires consumers use online banking credentials to verify identity. A successful pilot will prove the ability of a MorphoTrust issued eID, with the established trust of a driver license, to offer the same level of trust necessary to obtain a miiCard passport, enabling even more consumers to participate in high value online transactions. In turn, businesses can offer more services to reduce costs for consumers and expand what is possible online.

"This is a key next step in the development of trust and usability in online identities," said miiCard CEO James Varga. "We are honored to work with the State of North Carolina and the coalition assembled by MorphoTrust in proving the value of a trusted identity that can be used to purchase a car, a home or land a job purely online."

miiCard gives individuals complete control over the management and sharing of their identity and personal information. Everything from bank accounts, credit bureau data, and personal information can be verified and protected within a single, convenient identity that is trusted across the web and always ready to use.

"This pilot will help establish electronic equivalents to a physical driver's license as a proof of identity online. miiCard is an important part of proving the broader use case of enabling an eID to be used as a tool to unlock commercial services online," said Bob Eckel, MorphoTrust CEO.

The news comes after miiCard announced its continued US expansion last week with the appointment of Peter Esparrago as President, North America, the opening of a St. Louis office and the launch of DirectID for the consumer finance market.

About the Pilot

The State of North Carolina, MorphoTrust and a team of carefully selected partners will collaborate to test a driver license equivalent proof-of-identity for online transactions. The team will focus on a use case for the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) program operated by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS). FNS applicants choosing to participate in the pilot will create an Electronic ID (eID) using their existing North Carolina driver license or state ID to establish a trusted identity, meeting the same requirements as the traditional in-person identity verification during the application process. These applicants will use a combination of standard mobile devices (iPhone and Android app), their driver license/state-ID and an electronic photo verification linking them to the photo on record at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NC DOT).
