Online Retailers Poised for Strong Holiday Season

The Bedford Report Provides Analyst Research on eBay & Amazon

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - November 23, 2010) - The unofficial start of the holiday shopping season is right around the corner with "Black Friday" taking place later this week. In recent years, online retailers have become an increasingly popular destination for holiday shoppers. Forrester Research recently reported that a survey of 4,700 online consumers expect to make 37% of their holiday purchases on the Web this year, versus 30% in 2009. By shopping online, consumers can avoid the long lines and panic that have become fixtures at traditional retailers this time of year. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Internet Retailers Industry and provides research reports on eBay, Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN). eBay, Amazon and other online retailers offer extremely discounted deals on shipping which is taking consumers away from the stores and on to the Web. Forrester Research predicts that online retail sales in the U.S. will grow 16% this holiday shopping season compared to last year. This is a frightening stat for traditional retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Target as the National Retail Federation believes overall retail shopping is likely to increase a mere 2.4% this year.

Amazon and eBay are also both embracing the new trend towards mobile phone commerce, or m-commerce, where persons buy and sell products via their smartphones. Recently both eBay and Amazon launched iPhone apps for mobile Christmas shoppers. eBay's Mobile VP Steve Yankovich says that the company has "listened to our 13 million+ mobile app users and we've updated our eBay iPhone app to be a one stop shop for all of their holiday buying and selling needs."
