ONTARIO BEER STORE WORKERS RATIFY CONTRACT

UFCW Canada Local 12R24 sees major gains in three year deal Attention: Business/Financial Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 13, 2005) - Employees at The Beer Store retail and distribution centres in Ontario have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract containing major gains in wages, benefits and promotion opportunities.

A tentative deal was reached on March 20th between The Beer Store and UFCW Canada Local 12R24 (United Food and Commercial Workers Canada) union. Over the last three weeks ratification meetings were held across the province, with 73% of the union membership approving the terms of the new contract.

"The contract we negotiated provides major improvements across the board," according to UFCW Canada Local 12R24 president John Montgomery.

"On average workers will see their pay go up 3% annually over the life of the contract," said Montgomery, "as well as receive an additional 3% increase in the employer's contribution to their pension plans."

"Our members also made gains in early retirement opportunities," added Montgomery, "and the chance for part-time employees to move into full-time positions has also been enhanced."

The three-year contract covers about 6,000 workers.

UFCW Canada (United Food and Commercial Workers) is one of the largest private sector unions in Canada with more than 230,000 members working in every aspect of the food and retail industry, as well as other service, commercial, processing, manufacturing, technical and professional occupations.
