UFCW Canada Local 12R24 union members see major gains Attention: Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 13, 2005) - Employees at The Beer Store retail and distribution centres in Ontario have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract containing major gains in wages, benefits and promotion opportunities.

A tentative deal was reached between UFCW Canada Local 12R24 and The Beer Store on March 20th. Over the past three weeks contract ratification meetings were conducted across the province.

The deal was ratified by 73% of the members.

"The contract we negotiated provides major improvements across the board," according to UFCW Canada Local 12R24 president John Montgomery.

"On average workers will see their pay go up 3% annually over the life of the contract," said Montgomery, "as well as receive an additional 3% increase in the employer's contribution to their pension plans."

"Our members almost made gains in early retirement opportunities, " added Montgomery, "and the chance for part-time employees to move into full-time positions has also been enhanced."

The three-year contract covers about 6,000 workers.

UFCW Canada (United Food and Commercial Workers) is one of the largest private sector unions in Canada with more than 230,000 members working in every aspect of the food and retail industry, as well as other service, commercial, processing, manufacturing, technical and professional occupations.
